Male mostly visit laser hair removal clinic for beard shaping, ear, armpit & private part hair removal, and also to get rid of thick unibrows and full body hair removal. Ladies do come for upper lips, underarms, full leg, bikini, and full body. But nowadays you can see there is more dissatisfaction in patients after attending 10 to 20 sessions. So I thought we needed to address this issue and asked Dr. Jagdish Sakhiya, Well known Dermatologist of India, why is this happening to patients? And he shared with us some of the major reasons why laser hair removal doesn’t work? Keep reading to find out why laser hair treatment doesn’t work.

What are the Reasons/Factors Why Laser Hair Removal does not work?

Some patients come up with this complaint that we did laser removal of the lower face and we can see the result no doubt but the hair grew in the neck. This disease is called paradoxical hypertrichosis. That’s why we did an analysis on why it is happening to some patients? And we found out that the reason behind all of this is because of cheap Chinese laser machines and the operator’s lack of knowledge. We have listed some of the reasons below why laser hair removal doesn’t work?

Reason no.1:  Irregular Sessions
When patients delay or are not consistent with sessions they can see initial results but the result fades away and the hair growth comes back to normal. Facial hair takes four weeks to regrow and body hair takes 2-3 months to regrow.

Solution: Don’t do facial hair removal before 1 month and body hair removal before 2 months. Scientifically hair growth has 3 phases: Anagen, catagen, and telogen. Laser hair removal works in the anagen phase, doesn’t work in the telogen and catagen phase. Results will not show up if you come too early or if you delay your regular session.

Reason no. 2: Wrong Parameter
It depends on the operator. If it is performed under non-dermatologists guidance or if the operator selects the wrong parameter in the absence of dermatologists, the patient will not get the result. The selection of pulse duration, energy, and cooling should be perfect to achieve the required result.

Reason no.3: Hormonal disturbance
Hormonal dependent areas in females like chin, cheeks, chest line, upper back, and outer hand don’t show results in P.C.O.S. so females require more sessions and timely sessions. Because Laser works on thick hair, do not work on thin and soft hair.

Reason no.4: Knowledge and skill
Other than above mentioned reasons, skill, expertise and knowledge are critical because a patient’s skin may be dry, dark or thin and a different region of body part requires different laser power. If more power is used, then it is a problem and If less power is used then, it will not show accurate results. On the contrary, if more power is used then, paradoxical hypertrichosis can be seen in patients as we mentioned above.

Reason no.5: Uneven hair thickness
One of the reasons for not getting results from laser hair removal is when the thickness of hair is different in the same region. Your underarms have thick hair but all are evenly grown that’s why you get quick results but for example, if you have uneven hair thickness on your chin then you will get poor results and maybe your sessions will get increased.

Reason no.6: Thin hair
Sometimes patients do come with thin facial hair for treatment but laser treatment on thin hair is not possible, Yes with Q-switch ND-Yag laser you may delay the hair growth but you can not remove it completely.

How to Cure Paradoxical Hypertrichosis?

  1. If a dermatologist says, do the hormone test.
  2. Consider the opinion of an endocrinologist if there is an issue.
  3. Time to time sessions are crucial and if new hair grows then also don’t panic, the solution is also the laser hair removal.

There are three types of laser used to treat paradoxical hypertrichosis: Diode Laser, Long Pulsed ND Yag Laser, Alexandrite Laser, Ruby Laser, IPl Laser.

In short, expertise, knowledge and skills of an operator are necessary and also which machine they use?  – Is that FDA approved?

Nowadays all the technicians perform the laser treatment but you need to check if it is performed under a dermatologist’s guidance and observation.

I hope after reading this, you understand why laser hair removal doesn’t work on some patients?
